We all take this day to remember the people who have passed away serving in the armed forces. These people were brave, courageous, and fearless. The people who are in combat currently face the same sorts of challenges as those who have been in the armed forces previously. Although these challenges and hurdles have changed as the years have gone by, this has not stopped people from joining the armed forces and risking their lives in order to protect us back home. Those in the armed forces have sacrificed so much of themselves, their lives, and the lives of their families for the betterment of the rest of society.

Yes, medicine is hard but like so many other things, Medicine is not the only difficult thing to pursue. We think that in Medicine we will have to give up so much of our lives but let’s take a second to compare to those people in the armed forces. Those in the armed forces sometimes have to leave their families behind for months on end and they do not get to see their families or live their normal lives for long periods of time. The kind of sacrifice they make is insurmountable. So why is that we who pursue Medicine make our lives sound terrible? Medicine is difficult and you are required to make sacrifices also but I think there are so many different paths you can take that would require you to sacrifice part of your life that you do not want to. Remind yourself that sacrifice is part of everything and is not innate to just Medicine.

There is no such thing as a dream job, just jobs that come very close to being your dream job. If you think that Medicine could be your dream job then push yourself to get there. Even though Medicine may not end up being exactly how you dreamed it would be, just remind yourself that nothing is perfect but the dream is to get as close as you can to perfection and make that your new perfection.

This Memorial Day, think about the sacrifices that others have made for your safety and remember that we all make sacrifices in life. Pursuing Medicine is all about sacrifices also but just like those in the armed forces feel as if that is their calling, if Medicine is your calling then the sacrifices will be easy to overcome.

Hope you have a Happy Memorial Day!
