BE OKAY WITH MAKING MISTAKES

Residency is all about learning from your mistakes and also being okay with making mistakes. It is so hard because there is so much to learn and no matter what you do you always feel like you do not know anything. It is a lot like starting college when you felt super confused in the beginning about everything – from when to exercise to what to eat to how to study. Residency is just like that!

LEARN ON THE GO

Because you are so busy all the time, it is important for you to try and learn as much as you can while you are on the job because you just do not have enough time in the world to read up on everything once you get home. Also you learn better when you learn with association so when you see a patient and read about him/her then you are more likely to remember that. Same thing goes for college, when you learn something in class make sure to read about it that day since you will be able to better associate what you have learned with associations from what was taught in class.

TAKE TIME FOR YOURSELF

When you start something new it is very overwhelming and also time consuming so it is very easy to lose sight of things that are important to you outside of your classes in school or for myself Residency. The first thing that we all give up is quality time for ourselves thinking that if we can focus that time on school work that will improve our grades and what not. However giving up quality time for yourself is bad for you in the long run because you are not able to work well when you are exhausted from working.

TRY TO ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN

When you are going through something rough it is easy to think the worst and always look forward to the next thing. However you will never get this time back. And I can almost gguaranteethat one day when you are in my shoes you will look back and crave your college years even though most nights were spent endlessly studying in the library. But when you pass this stage you will miss it so try to enjoy as much of it as you can.
