The only thing separating you from the most crucial examination of your life is 12 hours. To a non-test taker, this much time seems infinite. You can fly to Europe, watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and even finish a novel. However, any pre-med student knows that the day before your MCAT passes with the blink of an eye. It’s the day that makes you question if the months of studying, six week long prep courses and sleepless nights were enough. Everyone copes with these stresses in different ways. Here are some beneficial pieces of advice that I feel will ensure that the day of your exam goes smoothly.

Get Organized

The best way to prepare the night before your exam is to make sure you have everything ready to go for the test day. A valid form of identification, wallet, keys, sweatshirt, snack and address of the test location are all components that need to be gathered beforehand. Keeping all your materials organized will make the test day less stressful.

Light Review

While it is said that reviewing any MCAT concepts the day before the exam is a big no-no, many pre-meds find it helpful to quickly run through any pertinent equations or topics. Skimming through flashcards may just help ease any qualms you have running through your mind the hours before your examination.

Spend Time with Loved Ones

In order to squash feelings of uneasiness, it is best to surround yourself with people who you know are cheering for you. Junior Unsa Shafi did just that the night before her MCAT exam. She said, “The night before, I reviewed a little and then just ate ice cream with my brothers. ”A strong support system and being around people who love you can give you that extra vote of confidence that separates a good test score from a great test score.


After months and months of studying, its finally nice to know that you can afford a full night of relaxation. Take a warm bath, watch your favorite TV show, and eat a well-balanced dinner. It is recommend that you get a good workout 4-6 hours before you plan to go to sleep. This releases endorphins and helps you sleep better at night. The more relaxed you are the night before the exam, the more relaxed you’ll be when you wake up and conquer it.

Sleep Early

Probably the most important thing you can do the night before your exam is get a good night of sleep. Going into such a strenuous testing environment on 3 hours will not bode well if you’re aiming to score high. Set an alarm and trust in yourself! The only thing separating you from your future in medical school is 12 hours.
